Cairo to Luxor, the road few travelers take

6-Day Western Desert Oases Tour: Overview

Most visitors fly from Cairo to Luxor in an hour. You will take the road that caravans used for thousands of years. Our private 6-day Western Desert oases tour begins at the Pyramids of Giza and ends in Luxor, crossing the Black and White Deserts and three living oases, Bahariya, Dakhla and Kharga, on a journey that very few travelers ever get to make.

Day one is pure ancient Egypt: the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx and the treasures of Tutankhamun at the Grand Egyptian Museum. Then the city falls away. In Bahariya Oasis, our home, you swim in hot springs, watch the sunset over the Salt Lake from the dunes, and in the evening you sit down to dinner inside a local Bahariya family house: sharing food, tea and stories the way neighbours do here.

Next comes a full 4×4 safari through the volcanic hills of the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain, Agabat Valley and the chalk sculptures of the White Desert National Park, ending with dinner in the open desert as the stars come out. From there, the road leads deeper south. In Dakhla Oasis you walk through the medieval mud-brick lanes of Al Qasr and visit the Roman-era temple of Deir El Hagar. In Kharga Oasis you stand inside the Temple of Hibis, decorated under the Persian king Darius I, and explore the Bagawat Necropolis, one of the oldest Christian cemeteries in the world.

Throughout the journey you travel with a local team who treat you as friends, not customers. We share our food, our customs and the stories behind every place, the ancient sea that created the White Desert, the caravans that crossed these oases, the families who still live by their springs. And there is always time for one more cup of tea.

On day six the desert road brings you back to the Nile Valley, and the tour ends in Luxor, ready for the temples of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. If you prefer to return to Cairo, see our 4-day White Desert tour.
