What is Crystal Mountain?
Crystal Mountain is not a big mountain at all. It is a low ridge with a natural arch, made of rock packed with quartz and calcite crystals. When the sun hits it, the whole ridge glitters. Geologists think the crystals formed as mineral-rich water filled cracks in the rock long ago, then crystallized as it slowly dried.

Where is it?
The ridge sits beside the road between the Black Desert and the White Desert, about an hour south of Bawiti. Because it is right on the route, every tour stops here on the way to the White Desert. You can read the full route in our guide from Cairo to the White Desert.
What to expect on your visit
The stop is short and easy. You walk a few minutes from the car, climb a little onto the ridge and look closely at the clear and white crystals in the rock. The small natural arch is a favourite photo spot. Fifteen to thirty minutes is enough.

Crystal Mountain on the classic desert route
Crystal Mountain is one pearl on a string. Before it comes the Black Desert, after it come Agabat Valley and the White Desert National Park. Seeing them in one afternoon shows you three completely different deserts in a few hours.

How to visit Crystal Mountain
It is included on our White Desert day trip, the 2-day White Desert tour and longer trips like the 3-day White Desert and Bahariya tour. Our 2027 eclipse tours also stop here on the way to the eclipse camp.

Crystal Mountain Egypt: the short version
Crystal Mountain Egypt is a short but magical stop. See it in the sun, take photos instead of crystals, and enjoy Crystal Mountain Egypt as part of the classic route between the Black and White Desert.
