Why Siwa is different from anywhere else in Egypt

Siwa feels like another country. The people speak Siwi, an Amazigh (Berber) language, alongside Arabic. Women wear traditional embroidered dress, donkey carts share the roads with tuk-tuks, and the town is built around the ruins of a mud-brick fortress that melted in rare heavy rains in the 1920s. Around it lie more than 300,000 palm trees, olive groves, springs and salt lakes, all surrounded by the Sahara.

Where is Siwa and how do you get there?

Siwa lies in the far west of Egypt, about 50 km from the Libyan border. From Cairo you drive northwest toward the Mediterranean coast, follow it to Marsa Matrouh, then turn south for about 300 km through open desert. The total is roughly 750 km, or 9 to 10 hours with stops. Buses also run from Cairo and Alexandria. All the options are compared in our guide on how to get to Siwa Oasis.

Top things to do in Siwa

Permits and safety

Siwa town is safe and relaxed, and visitors are welcome. Trips into the Great Sand Sea and some remote areas need permits, which licensed operators arrange. Carry your passport for checkpoints on the road from Matrouh. As always, check your government’s travel advice before you go.

Where to stay and what to eat

Siwa has charming eco-lodges built from kershef, the local salt and mud building material, plus simple hotels in town. Try dates and olives from the gardens, Siwan bread, and fresh juice of mint and hibiscus. Our tours include comfortable accommodation and local meals.

Combining Siwa with the White Desert

Siwa and the White Desert are two very different faces of the Western Desert. A desert road links Siwa and Bahariya, which makes the 5-day Siwa Oasis and White Desert tour the best way to see both without going back to Cairo in between. Read our White Desert Egypt guide to plan the second half.

Siwa Oasis: the short version

Siwa Oasis rewards the long road with salt lakes, dunes, ancient ruins and a culture found nowhere else in Egypt. Plan three to four days, travel between October and April, and Siwa Oasis will feel like a different world.
