What is Wadi El Rayan?
Wadi El Rayan is a desert depression that was filled with drainage water from Fayoum’s farms in the 1970s, creating two large lakes in the middle of the sand. Where the upper lake spills into the lower one, a series of small waterfalls formed, the largest in Egypt. Around them, golden dunes, rock ridges and quiet beaches make it one of the most surprising landscapes near Cairo.

Highlights you should not miss
- The waterfalls: cascades between the two lakes, with cafés and spots to put your feet in the water.
- The Magic Lake: a lake that changes colour through the day, framed by tall dunes.
- Sandboarding: the dunes above the Magic Lake are perfect for it.
- Mudawara mountain: a short climb for a panoramic view over the lakes and dunes.

Getting there from Cairo
From Cairo you drive about 2 hours to Fayoum and another 30 to 40 minutes to the protected area. Some spots, like the Magic Lake dunes, are reached on sand tracks where a 4×4 is best. Our Fayoum day trip includes transport, 4×4 and tickets.
Best time to visit
October to April has pleasant days for walking and sandboarding. In summer the lakes are lovely for swimming but the dunes get very hot at midday. Weekends and holidays are busy with Egyptian families, so weekdays are quieter.

Combine it with Wadi Al Hitan
Wadi El Rayan and the whale fossils of Wadi Al Hitan are in the same protected area, so they are visited together. With two days you can camp under the stars and add Lake Qarun and Tunis village: see the 2-day Fayoum tour. Fayoum is also the first stop of our 5-day Pyramids, Fayoum and White Desert tour.

Wadi El Rayan: the short version
Wadi El Rayan brings waterfalls, lakes and dunes together just 2.5 hours from Cairo. Combine Wadi El Rayan with Wadi Al Hitan for the easiest and most varied desert day trip near the capital.
