The essential checklist
This White Desert packing list is the one our guides give to every guest. Nothing on this White Desert packing list is heavy or expensive, and it works for day trips and overnight camping.
- Passport (needed at checkpoints)
- Warm jacket, fleece or down, plus a hat
- Light long-sleeved shirt and comfortable trousers
- Closed shoes and warm socks
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm
- Scarf or buff against wind and sand
- Head torch or a small torch
- Power bank and charging cable
- Wet wipes, tissues and hand sanitizer
- Personal medicine and a small first aid kit
- Small backpack for the day
- Cash in Egyptian pounds for snacks and tips

Winter packing (November to March)
Nights in the White Desert can fall close to 0°C in December and January. Bring a proper warm jacket, a hat, gloves and thermal layers for sleeping. A pair of thick socks makes a big difference. During the day you will still want sunglasses and sunscreen, because the sun is strong even when the air is cool.
Summer packing (May to September)
Choose loose, light-coloured clothes that cover your arms and legs, a wide hat and a refillable bottle. Nights are warm, so a light layer is enough. Drink often and keep a scarf to wet and wear around your neck in the afternoon.

Photography gear
- A wide lens for the formations and a tripod for the stars
- Spare batteries: cold nights drain them fast
- Lens cloth and a zip bag to protect gear from sand
- Change lenses inside the car, never in the wind

What you do not need to bring
On our trips you do not need a tent, sleeping bag, mattress, blankets, cooking gear, food or drinking water. Leave heavy suitcases at your hotel in Cairo and bring only a small bag. Ask us if you need a place to leave luggage in Cairo.
What to wear as a woman in the desert and in Bahariya
In the desert, wear what is comfortable. In Bahariya village, shoulders and knees covered is respectful. A light scarf is useful for both sun and modesty. For more practical advice see our White Desert safety guide and camping guide.
