White Desert Camping: What a Night Under the Stars Is Really Like
White Desert camping means one night in a simple Bedouin camp among the chalk formations: a windbreak, mattresses, sleeping bags, a fire, dinner cooked on the coals and a sky full of stars. It is safe, it is basic (no toilets or showers) and it is the reason most travelers say the trip was the best night of their time in Egypt.

How White Desert camping works
An overnight trip almost always starts in Cairo or Giza in the morning. You reach Bahariya Oasis for lunch, then a 4×4 takes you through the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain and Agabat Valley, arriving in the White Desert about an hour before sunset. That timing is not random: your guide wants you to see the chalk turn pink while the team builds the camp.
Camps are not fixed. Each operator chooses a sheltered spot behind the rocks, away from other groups, so the night feels private. On our trips the camp is set up only for your group.

The night, hour by hour
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| Around 5 PM | Sunset walk between the chalk towers, photos and silence |
| 6 PM | The team builds the windbreak, lays carpets and lights the fire |
| 7 PM | Tea on the coals while chicken or lamb cooks on the embers |
| 8 PM | Dinner together: grilled meat, rice, salads, bread and fruit |
| 9 PM onwards | Stargazing, stories, sometimes Bedouin songs and a visit from a fennec fox |
| Around 6 AM | Sunrise over the formations, coffee and breakfast |
The best moment for many guests is around 10 PM, when the fire is low and the Milky Way stretches from one horizon to the other. Phones stay in pockets. People talk quietly or not at all.
Tent or open sky: where do you sleep?
You choose. Most camps have small tents for privacy and wind protection, and many guests drag their mattress out of the tent to sleep under the stars. On calm nights in spring or autumn, sleeping outside is unforgettable. On windy nights or in December and January, the tent is the warmer choice.

Toilets, showers and comfort: the honest truth
There are no toilets, showers or running water inside the White Desert National Park. Your guide will point out a discreet area behind the rocks and give you tissues, and you will have water for washing hands and teeth. If this worries you, two things help: use the facilities at the restaurant in Bahariya before you leave, and choose a 3-day trip with a hotel night in Bahariya so you only camp once.
Wet wipes, a head torch and a small trash bag make the night much easier.
How cold does it get at night?
It depends on the month. In October, November, March and April nights are pleasant at 10 to 16°C. In December, January and February they can drop to 2 to 8°C and occasionally close to 0°C. In summer nights stay warm at 20 to 25°C. Good camps provide thick sleeping bags and extra blankets, but you should bring a warm jacket, a hat and socks. See the best time to visit the White Desert for month-by-month details.

Is camping in the White Desert safe?
Yes. The park is protected, tours enter with permits, and your guide and driver stay with you all night. The main things to manage are the cold, the sun during the day and staying close to camp after dark. Snakes and scorpions exist in the desert but are rarely seen in the cool months, and the fennec foxes are shy and harmless. More detail in our guide: is the White Desert safe?

How to choose a good camping trip
Cheap trips save money on the things you notice most at night: thin mattresses, shared camps with many groups, poor food and old 4x4s. Ask these questions before you book:
- Is the camp private for my group?
- Are sleeping bags and blankets included?
- Are the park ticket and permits in the price?
- Is the guide local to Bahariya?
- What is for dinner and breakfast?
On our 2-day White Desert tour the answer to all five is yes. If you prefer a group celebration, our New Year’s Eve desert camp and Christmas camp are shared events with music and fireworks.

White Desert camping: the short version
White Desert camping is simple, safe and unforgettable when the camp is private and the gear is good. Ask the right questions before you book, pack a warm jacket, and White Desert camping will give you the best night of your time in Egypt.
White Desert camping FAQ
Is White Desert camping worth it?
Yes. The sunset, the stars and the silence at night are the main reason to go. A day trip shows you the rocks, but camping shows you the desert.
Can I camp in the White Desert without a tour?
No. You need a licensed operator and permits to enter and camp in the national park, and a 4×4 to reach the camping areas.
Are there toilets at White Desert camps?
No. There are no facilities in the park. Your guide shows you a private spot and provides water and tissues.
What do you eat when camping in the White Desert?
Usually grilled chicken or lamb, rice, vegetables, salads and bread for dinner, and eggs, cheese, bread and tea or coffee for breakfast.
Is it safe to sleep outside the tent?
Yes, on calm nights. Your guide stays at the camp, and the wildlife you may see, like fennec foxes, is harmless.
How cold is the White Desert at night in winter?
In December and January nights can drop close to 0°C. Bring a warm jacket and hat. Sleeping bags and blankets are provided.
