Spring and autumn: the sweet spot

October, November, March and April give you warm sunshine for walking among the formations and nights where a light jacket is enough by the fire. This is when we recommend first-time visitors and families go. The only thing to watch in March and April is the khamaseen, a hot wind that can bring a day or two of sand. Your guide will shelter the camp behind the rocks if it blows.

Winter: cold nights and the clearest skies

From December to February the desert is at its most beautiful for stargazing. The air is dry and clear, the Milky Way is sharp, and sunsets are long and soft. The price is cold: nights can fall close to 0°C. With a good sleeping bag, extra blankets and a fire, it is cosy, not miserable. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and thermal layers.

Winter is also festive. We run shared celebration camps for Christmas in the White Desert and New Year’s Eve in the White Desert, with a Bedouin band, a grill and safe fireworks.

Summer: can you visit the White Desert in July?

Yes, but plan around the heat. Days pass 40°C, so good trips leave Cairo very early, rest in the shade at midday and do the desert in the late afternoon and evening. Nights are warm and perfect for sleeping under the open sky. Drink a lot of water and avoid long walks between 11 AM and 4 PM. In 2027 summer has a special reason to come: the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 passes right over this desert.

Moon phases, crowds and holidays

For the best stars, pick dates near the new moon. A full moon lights the white rocks like daylight, which is magical for photos but hides the faint stars. The park is busiest around Christmas, New Year, Easter and Egyptian public holidays. Even then the desert is huge and private camps feel quiet.

Photographer tip: come 2 to 3 days after the new moon. You get a thin moon at sunset for foreground light and a dark sky after it sets.

How to plan around the season

Whatever month you choose, a 2-day White Desert trip works all year. In winter we add extra blankets, in summer we start earlier and stretch the midday rest. If you are travelling with kids or older parents, spring and autumn are easiest. For the full picture of the park, start with our complete White Desert Egypt guide.
