What is the Black Desert?

Picture a desert of golden-orange sand where every hill looks dusted with black pepper. Those dark stones are iron-rich rock and volcanic debris that weathered off the hilltops over millions of years and scattered down the slopes. The contrast with the white chalk you see later the same day is what makes the Black and White Desert route so special.

Where is it and how do you get there?

The Black Desert starts roughly 50 km south of Bawiti, the main town of Bahariya Oasis, along the road toward Farafra. From Cairo that is about 400 km. Most travelers reach it as part of a White Desert trip: lunch in Bahariya, then a short drive to the first black hills. Read the full route in our guide from Cairo to the White Desert.

The best thing to do: climb a black hill

The highlight is a short climb up one of the cone-shaped hills. It takes 10 to 15 minutes on loose stones, and from the top you see dozens of black peaks rolling to the horizon. Wear closed shoes and take it slowly on the way down. Our guides know which hills have the easiest path and the best view, and avoid the crowded ones.

Local tip: the small hill called English Mountain in Bahariya, with a British lookout from the First World War, gives a beautiful view over the oasis and the start of the Black Desert at sunset.

Combining the Black Desert with the White Desert

The Black Desert is rarely visited alone. The classic route is Bahariya, Black Desert, Crystal Mountain, Agabat Valley and the White Desert, with a night of camping. Our 2-day White Desert tour covers all of them, and the day trip includes a shorter stop.

  • Do not take stones as souvenirs; the area is part of a protected landscape.
  • Combine with lunch in Bahariya and the warm springs of El Hez.
