Why Wadi Al Hitan matters
Millions of years ago this desert was the bottom of a shallow sea. Whales such as Basilosaurus and Dorudon lived and died here, and the sand preserved their skeletons. What makes the site special is that these whales still had tiny hind legs, a clear step in the evolution from land animals to the whales we know today. UNESCO added the valley to its World Heritage list in 2005.

What you see on a visit
- Open-air fossils: whale skeletons lying in the sand along a marked trail, protected by low barriers.
- The Fossils and Climate Change Museum: a domed museum built into the sand, with a complete whale skeleton and clear displays.
- Wind-carved rocks: mushroom-shaped and tower-like formations, beautiful at sunset.
- Stars at night: Wadi Al Hitan is one of the best stargazing spots near Cairo.

How to get there from Cairo
Wadi Al Hitan lies inside the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area. From Cairo you drive about 2 hours to Fayoum, then the last part is a desert track where a 4×4 is the safe choice. That is why most visitors come on a Fayoum day trip from Cairo with transport and park tickets arranged.
Best time to visit
From October to April the walk around the fossils is comfortable. In summer visit late in the afternoon. The walking trail is flat but fully exposed, so bring a hat and water. Sunset over the rock formations is the most beautiful time.

Combining with Wadi El Rayan and Fayoum
Almost every trip pairs Wadi Al Hitan with the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls and the Magic Lake, and some add Lake Qarun and the pottery village of Tunis. With two days you can camp under the stars in the protected area. See our 2-day Fayoum tour.

Tips for your visit
- Stay on the marked trail and do not touch the fossils.
- Bring water, sunscreen and comfortable shoes.
- Visit the museum first, then the fossils make more sense.
- Stay for sunset if you can.
