What is happening on 2 August 2027?
On 2 August 2027 the Moon will pass directly in front of the Sun, turning day into night along a narrow path that crosses Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. In Egypt the path of totality runs from the Western Desert across the Nile Valley around Luxor to the Red Sea. Inside that path, the Sun is completely covered for several minutes; outside it, you only see a partial eclipse. Details of the path are published by NASA and on the eclipse page on Wikipedia.

Where to watch: Luxor or the Western Desert?
| Place | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Luxor | Near the point of longest totality, temples, hotels | Expected to be very crowded and expensive |
| Western Desert (Bahariya, White Desert) | Open horizons, dark sky feel, far fewer people | Very hot, needs an organized camp |
| Red Sea coast | Beach holiday plus eclipse | Coastal haze possible, crowded resorts |
We are from Bahariya, so we are biased, but there is something unforgettable about watching day turn to night over an empty desert horizon.
How long will totality last?
Near Luxor, totality lasts a little over 6 minutes, close to the maximum for this eclipse. In the zone between the White Desert and the Black Desert where our camp is planned, the viewing point is chosen to give at least 6 minutes. Exact times depend on your location, so we share the timings and coordinates with confirmed guests.

Heat, weather and comfort in August
August in Egypt is hot: desert afternoons often pass 40°C. The upside is that skies are usually clear, which is what you want for an eclipse. Plan for shade, air conditioning and lots of water. Our eclipse camp is fully air-conditioned with shaded viewing areas, and the programme is built around the heat.

Eye safety: the one rule you must follow
Never look at the Sun during the partial phases without certified solar eye protection that meets the ISO 12312-2 standard. Normal sunglasses are not safe. Only during the few minutes of totality is it safe to look with the naked eye. Read NASA’s eclipse safety guidance before you travel.
How to book an eclipse trip
Hotels along the path of totality, especially in Luxor, are filling up early. We run three Western Desert eclipse trips with one fixed price per person, an air-conditioned camp limited to 40 guests and everything included:
- 2-day White Desert solar eclipse tour
- 3-day Egypt eclipse tour with a hotel night in Bahariya
- 4-day 2027 solar eclipse tour in Bahariya and the White Desert
