Djara Cave Egypt: Stalactites and Rock Art Deep in the Western Desert

Quick answer

Djara Cave is a limestone cave full of stalactites and stalagmites in the open desert between Farafra and the Nile Valley, with prehistoric rock engravings near its entrance. It is far off-road, so you visit it with an experienced 4×4 team and a permit, usually as an extra day added to a White Desert trip from Cairo.

What is Djara Cave?

Djara (also written Djara or Gara) is a cave that formed when water dissolved the limestone of the plateau thousands of years ago, at a time when this part of the Sahara was much wetter. Today you climb down a sandy slope into a chamber decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and curtains of stone that glow when your torch moves across them.

Near the entrance there are prehistoric engravings of animals such as gazelles and ostriches, a reminder that people once hunted here when the desert was green savanna.

A cave lost and found

The German explorer Gerhard Rohlfs reported the cave in 1873 during his Sahara expedition. Then it was forgotten for more than a century, until the desert traveller Carlo Bergmann found it again in 1989. Today it is one of the most remote and memorable stops in the Western Desert.

How to get to Djara Cave

There is no road to Djara. You reach it by 4×4 across open desert, with a driver who knows the route, a permit for the area and enough fuel and water. That is why it is usually done as part of a multi-day trip: Cairo to Bahariya, the Black Desert and White Desert, then a day exploring toward Djara before returning.

Our 3-day White Desert and Djara Cave tour follows this plan, with camping in the desert.

What to expect inside

  • A short, sandy descent into the cave; some steps are steep.
  • No lights inside: bring a good head torch.
  • Cool, quiet air and formations in every direction.
  • About 30 to 60 minutes inside is enough for most visitors.
Please protect it: do not touch the stalactites. Skin oil stops them growing, and many have already been damaged by visitors.

Combining Djara Cave with the White Desert

Djara is the perfect add-on if you love adventure and have three days. You still get the classic route through the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain and the White Desert, plus a day of real deep-desert driving. If you only have two days, stay with the 2-day White Desert tour.
