This Egypt itinerary 7 days plan mixes the three faces of Egypt in one week: the pharaohs, the desert and the Nile. Every part can be done privately with a local guide.

Day 1: Arrive in Cairo and walk Islamic Cairo

Land, check in and rest. In the late afternoon walk Al-Muizz Street, one of the richest streets of medieval Islamic architecture in the world, and end in the lanes of Khan el Khalili for tea and shopping. Keep the first day light: Cairo traffic and jet lag together are a lot. Our guide to things to do in Cairo has more ideas.

Day 2: The Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum

Start early at the Giza Plateau, before the heat and the crowds, then drive about 10 minutes to the Grand Egyptian Museum, home of the full Tutankhamun collection. This is the most important day of the week, so do it with a good Egyptologist. Our Grand Egyptian Museum and Pyramids tour includes tickets, guide and lunch, and our Grand Egyptian Museum tips help you plan the visit.

Day 3: Citadel and Cave Church, or a Fayoum day trip

If you love history, see the Citadel of Saladin, the Muhammad Ali Mosque and the extraordinary Cave Church carved into the Mokattam cliffs: our Citadel and Cave Church tour covers both. If you prefer nature, take a Fayoum day trip to the whale fossils of Wadi Al Hitan and the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan.

Days 4 and 5: A night in the White Desert

Leave Cairo at 7:00 AM for Bahariya Oasis, switch to a 4×4 and cross the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain before sunset among the chalk towers of the White Desert. Dinner is cooked on the fire, the tea is brewed on the coals and the Milky Way fills the sky. The next morning you see Mushroom Rock at sunrise and return to Cairo by evening. Many guests say this night was the highlight of their whole Egypt trip.

Days 6 and 7: Luxor

Take an early domestic flight from Cairo to Luxor (about one hour). Spend the afternoon at Karnak and Luxor Temple, which is beautiful when lit at night. On day 7 cross to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple, then fly back to Cairo for your international flight or continue south.

Egypt itinerary 7 days FAQ

Is 7 days enough for Egypt?

Yes, for the highlights: Cairo and Giza, one desert night and Luxor. For Aswan, a Nile cruise or Siwa, add 3 to 5 days.

Three days in Cairo and Giza, two days with a night in the White Desert and two days in Luxor.

Should I see Luxor or the White Desert in one week?

Both fit in 7 days if you fly to Luxor. If you prefer less travel, choose the desert and stay longer in Cairo.

When is the best time for a week in Egypt?

October to April, when days are warm and nights are cool.

Do I need a guide for Cairo?

For the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, a good Egyptologist makes the visit much richer and saves time.
