Checkpoints and permits
There are police checkpoints on the road south of Matrouh. Carry your passport. Siwa town itself does not need a special permit, but 4×4 trips into the Great Sand Sea and some remote areas do. Licensed operators handle them for you.

Tips for the long road
- Leave early to arrive before dark.
- Stop in Marsa Matrouh for lunch and fuel.
- Bring water, snacks and a downloaded playlist: signal is patchy in the desert.
- Consider breaking the trip with a night on the coast in summer.

Getting around once you are in Siwa
Siwa town is small. Bicycles, tuk-tuks and donkey carts take you around the centre and to the nearby springs. For the salt lakes, Bir Wahed and the Great Sand Sea you need a 4×4 with a local driver. Our 3-day and 4-day Siwa tours include transport from Cairo, local transport and the Great Sand Sea safari.
From Bahariya and the White Desert
A desert road links Bahariya and Siwa, which needs a permit and an experienced team. It lets you combine both regions without returning to Cairo. That is exactly what our 5-day Siwa and White Desert tour does. For background on Siwa itself, read our Siwa Oasis travel guide.
