What is sandboarding?

Sandboarding is like snowboarding, but on sand. You ride a board down the slope of a dune, either standing like a snowboarder or sitting and sliding like a sled. There is no lift, so you walk back up the dune, which is part of the fun and a good workout.

Sand is slower than snow, so falls are soft and nobody goes too fast. That is why sandboarding in Egypt is perfect for families, friends and first timers. Most guests try sitting first, then standing after a few runs.

Dune buggy rides in Fayoum

The other big adventure in the Fayoum desert is a dune buggy ride. You drive a small, powerful off road buggy over the sand with a guide leading the way, up and down the dunes and across open desert. No experience is needed: you get a short briefing, a helmet and goggles, and the guide sets the pace.

Children can ride as passengers with an adult. If you prefer not to drive, you can ride beside the guide.

How a first sandboarding session works

Your guide starts on a small, gentle dune and shows you the two ways to ride. Sitting, you hold the front of the board, lift your feet and lean back to slow down. Standing, you place your feet across the board like a snowboarder, bend your knees and lean slightly back. Boards are waxed between runs so they slide better.

After a few runs on the small slope, you move to a taller dune. Most people manage five to ten runs before their legs get tired from climbing back up, and that is the perfect moment for tea in the shade.

Fayoum or Siwa for sandboarding?

Fayoum is the easy choice: close to Cairo, perfect for a day trip and full of other sights like Magic Lake, the waterfalls and Wadi Al Hitan. Siwa has bigger dunes and a more remote feeling, but it is about 9 to 10 hours from Cairo and needs at least three days. If you have one day, choose Fayoum. If you are planning a longer desert journey, Siwa and the Great Sand Sea are unforgettable.

A perfect Fayoum adventure day

  • 7:00 AM pickup at your hotel in Cairo or Giza.
  • 10:00 AM arrive in the Fayoum desert, briefing and dune buggy ride.
  • 11:30 AM sandboarding on the dunes above Magic Lake.
  • 1:30 PM lunch with a view.

  • 4:30 PM sunset over the dunes, then drive back to Cairo.

For history lovers, the fossil whales of Wadi Al Hitan are nearby and can be added on a longer day.

Safety tips

  • Start on small slopes and keep your feet up when sitting.
  • Keep your mouth closed and wear sunglasses or goggles.
  • Never board down a slope you have not checked from the top.
  • On the buggy, always wear the helmet and follow the guide’s tracks.
  • Drink plenty of water. Climbing dunes is hard work.

Best time to go

October to April is ideal. Winter mornings are fresh and afternoons are warm. In summer we start early and finish before the hottest hours. Dunes are softest and best for boarding after a windy day.

Wear long light clothes, closed shoes and a hat. Sand gets everywhere, so leave valuable cameras in a closed bag.
