The White Desert: the classic Egypt desert safari
If you do one desert in Egypt, make it the White Desert. In two days from Cairo you see three deserts (black, crystal and white), sleep in a Bedouin camp and wake up to sunrise among the chalk mushrooms. Read our complete White Desert guide or jump to what camping is really like.
Siwa and the Great Sand Sea: dunes and oasis life
Siwa is for travelers who want golden dunes, turquoise salt lakes and a unique Amazigh culture. The drive is long, so plan at least three days. The Great Sand Sea safari is the closest thing in Egypt to the Sahara of your imagination.

Fayoum: the easiest desert from Cairo
Just 2.5 hours away, Fayoum gives you whale fossils at Wadi Al Hitan, the waterfalls and Magic Lake of Wadi El Rayan and dunes for sandboarding. Perfect if you only have one free day.

What about desert safaris from Hurghada or Sharm?
Quad bike and jeep trips from the Red Sea resorts are fun for a few hours, but they stay close to town. They are a different experience from the deep Western Desert. If you are staying on the Red Sea and want the real thing, reach Cairo first and join a 2-day White Desert trip.
Which desert safari is right for you?
- First time in Egypt, 2 days free: 2-day White Desert tour.
- One day only: Fayoum day trip or the White Desert day trip.
- Dunes and culture: 4-day Siwa tour.
- The whole Western Desert: 5-day Siwa and White Desert or the 6-day oases tour to Luxor.
- Pyramids plus desert: 5-day Pyramids, Fayoum and White Desert.
