Why the White Desert is more than a photo stop
The White Desert National Park looks like another planet: giant white chalk towers shaped by the wind into mushrooms, pillars and animals, standing on golden sand. Most visitors spend a few hours here, take photos at the famous rocks and drive back. They miss the best part. The desert changes completely at sunset, at night and at sunrise, and the most memorable experiences happen when you slow down.
Here is our list, from the classics every traveler should see to the special experiences our guests love most.
The classics
1. Watch sunset among the formations
As the sun goes down the white rocks turn pink, orange and finally soft blue. Find a quiet formation, sit on the sand and watch. Nothing else in Egypt looks like this.
2. Visit Mushroom Rock and Chicken Rock
The two most famous formations of the New White Desert. Come early in the morning to see them without other groups.

3. Climb a hill in the Black Desert
On the way from Bahariya, climb one of the black topped volcanic hills for a view over the whole area. Read our Black Desert guide.
4. See Crystal Mountain and Agabat Valley
A ridge of quartz crystals, then a canyon of white cliffs and golden dunes. Both are on the road to the White Desert. See our Crystal Mountain guide.
Night experiences
5. Sleep at a desert camp
The single best thing to do in the White Desert. Dinner on the fire, Bedouin tea and music, and a mattress under the sky. Our White Desert camping guide explains everything.
6. Stargaze and see the Milky Way
Far from city lights, the sky is full of stars. Near the new moon you can see the Milky Way. Read our White Desert stargazing guide.

7. Wake up for sunrise
Get up before the sun, wrap yourself in a blanket and watch the first light hit the chalk towers. Then tea and breakfast by the fire.
Adventures and special experiences
8. Ride camels with Bedouin cameleers
Cross the desert slowly, the way caravans did for centuries. Our camel safari guide compares camel and jeep, and the 3-day camel trek combines both.
9. Hike between the formations
Walk 8 to 14 km a day through the Black Desert, Agabat and the chalk towers, with a 4×4 carrying your bags. See our hiking guide and the 3-day hiking tour.

10. Photograph golden hour and the Milky Way
The White Desert is a dream for photographers. Our photography tour plans every stop around the light.
11. Practice yoga at sunrise
Roll out your mat on the sand and practice in total silence. Read about our desert yoga retreat.
12. Relax in a hot spring in Bahariya
On the way back, stop at one of the natural hot or cool springs of Bahariya Oasis, a perfect end after a night in the desert.
